About

Minoan Brotherhood

The Minoan Brotherhood is an initiatory mystery Tradition, originating from British Traditional Witchcraft, for men who love men, that celebrates life, nature, magic and the Gods from ancient Crete and the Aegean sea on a contemporary context.

It was founded by Edmund (Eddie) Buczynski as a response to the heterosexist culture of most forms of traditional witchcraft prevalent in the 1970's.

Kêpos tou Érotos

Kêpos tou Érotos (The Garden of Eros), led by Minos Nerites D.A.X, is the first Grove of the Kommos line of the Minoan Brotherhood based in Italy, but open to international members from all over the continent.

The name of the Grove evokes the 'Garden of Eros' as a poetic and mythic place where our Gods, Spirits and Current of Power reside. A sacred Garden that each Initiate must tend within their Heart and Soul as part of the Great Work.

While Grove circles might be conducted in English, individual training and mentorship may be offered in English, Italian and Portuguese.

Deities

The Minoan Brotherhood has a duotheistic theology, centered around a Goddess and a God.

The Goddess to us is the Great Mother, through the form of the Minoan Snake Goddess which we publicly identify as Rhea.

As Her title suggests, She is the Mother of all living, and the very soul of Nature and the elements.

The God, instead of consort, assumes the role of the Divine Son. He is the God of our Mysteries, who can be associated to the figures of the Minotaur and the young God of Crete, which we publicly identify as Asterion, or the 'Starry One'.

About

Praxis

Deities

The Minoan Brotherhood is a spiritual tradition that celebrates the joy of life and nature.

Although the details of our cosmology are part of our Oathbound mysteries, our Festivals roughly resembles the most common Wheel of the year's holidays of contemporary paganism.

Besides the seasonal Festivals, we also give importance to the Full moon, reserved to the Work of Magic

Through the cycles of the seasons and the moon, we work and experience the Mysteries, and express a sense of joy, gratitude and devotion towards our Gods.

Using the poetry of myth to connect the external Powers of the Cosmos, both light and dark, with the Powers of our inner world, as men-loving-men and Priests of the Great Mother and Her Divine Son.

Ours is a magical religion, with the purpose of creating Beauty, bringing us closer to the Divine, and improve our lives in a physical, emotional and spiritual sense.

Training

The Minoan Brotherhood is an initiatory mystery tradition of witchcraft. Its deeper teachings are traditionally transmitted from teacher (Minos) to student, through personal guidance, ritual experience, and lived practice.

Training takes place through mentorship, study, ritual work, and participation in a spiritual brotherhood. The goal of the training is not simply to learn information, but to gradually enter into the living current of the tradition.

The path is structured around several core elements:

  • Students explore the mythology, symbolism, and philosophy of the Minoan Brotherhood, including Mediterranean myth, magical symbolism and dynamics, and the initiatory worldview of the tradition. Study helps build the intellectual and symbolic foundation needed to understand the Mysteries.

  • Spiritual growth within the tradition is rooted in experience. Training therefore includes meditation, visualization, ritual practice, magical techniques, and devotional work. These practices help students develop inner awareness, spiritual sensitivity, and magical discipline.

  • The tradition recognises three degrees of initiation, each marking a deeper relationship between the initiate, the Gods, and the Mysteries of the tradition. Initiation is not automatic; it arises naturally when a student has grown into readiness through study, practice, and participation. Training within Kêpos tou Érotos unfolds in three progressive phases, each designed to introduce students gradually to the spiritual current of the tradition.

Phase One – Orientation and Introduction
The first phase focuses on exploring the basic principles of the Minoan Brotherhood. Students learn foundational meditation and magical practices, and begin to understand the spiritual worldview of the tradition. This phase allows both student and teacher (Minos) to determine whether the path is a good fit.

Phase Two – The Mysteries of the Male Divine
In the second phase, students begin to explore the mysteries of the Divine Son and the sacred nature of male love within the tradition. The symbolism, mythology, and spiritual meaning of male Eros are explored more deeply, together with the spiritual anatomy of the masculine in its archetypal, mythological, and embodied dimensions. At this stage, students also begin participating more actively in ritual work and group gatherings (depending on distance).

Phase Three – The Mysteries of the Goddess
The third phase introduces students to the mysteries of the Great Mother, whose presence forms the living centre of the Minoan spiritual current. Here the balance between masculine and feminine divine forces becomes clearer, and students deepen their understanding of the sacred relationship between the Gods, nature, and the human soul.

Throughout these phases, students gradually become more attuned to the living current of the tradition. The training touches on many aspects of the path, including myth, magic, devotion, divination, ritual, and the spiritual role of the Witch-Priest. Running through our teachings is a clear undercurrent of the Hermetic esoteric tradition.

The Wheel of the Year and the cycles of the Moon form an important part of this training. Seasonal festivals and lunar observances help students align their practice with the rhythms of nature and the sacred calendar of the tradition.

When a student progresses well through these phases, the training may eventually lead to initiation in the First Degree and formal entry into the Minoan Brotherhood. After initiation, the deeper Mysteries of the tradition are gradually revealed within the initiatory lineage.

The training itself follows the rhythm of an initiatory path, rather than a fixed course schedule. Traditionally, the preparatory training lasts at least a year and a day, which is a common timeframe in many initiatory traditions of witchcraft. In practice, however, the process often takes longer, as students need time to absorb, practice, and integrate the different aspects of the tradition.

The emphasis is therefore not on speed, but on depth of understanding and genuine personal transformation. Each student progresses at their own pace, guided by experience, practice, and the unfolding relationship with the Mysteries. Grove Gatherings might be conducted in English to accomodate students of different nationalities, but individual mentorship can be offered in English, Portuguese and Italian

The training process is offered mainly in Nothern Italy, but different accomodations can be used on a case by case basis.

Students are personally guided by Minos Nerites, who provides mentorship, guidance, and instruction throughout the training process. The role of the Minos is to guide and support students on the path, and he remains available to them for questions, guidance, and spiritual support throughout their development.

One of the principles of the tradition is that spiritual training is not a commercial activity. For this reason, there is no tuition fee or “lesson fee” for the training itself. Apart from your own commitment and dedication, the training itself is free of charge.

Students are, however, responsible for their own personal expenses, which may include:
•    acquiring personal ritual tools or study materials
•    travel costs for gatherings or meetings
•    possible accommodation costs when visiting the Grove

We offer both in-person training and long-distance mentorship. For students who live further away, online guidance and study are possible, combined with regular in-person meetings and gatherings (depending on distance). While the training can be adapted to individual circumstances, personal contact and shared ritual experience remain an essential part of the path. Initiations are always given in person.

For many gay and bisexual men, the experience of growing up in the modern world is often marked by a subtle - and sometimes not so subtle - sense of separation.

- Separation from the body.
- Separation from authentic desire.
- Separation from spirituality.

Even today, love between men is often misunderstood, reduced, or pushed into the margins of both society and spiritual traditions. In many paths, male love is either ignored, moralised, or stripped of its deeper meaning. As a result, many men grow up without a spiritual framework that truly reflects who they are.

The Minoan Brotherhood offers another way.

Within this tradition, love between men is not something to be explained or justified, but something to be honoured as sacred. Eros is not seen as separate from spirituality, but as one of its most powerful expressions.

This creates a space where men can begin to reconnect:

- with their body, without shame
- with their desire, without fragmentation
- with their spirituality, without compromise
- with other men, in a way that is both intimate and respectful

At the same time, the tradition provides something that is often missing: a structured initiatory path. Not a loose collection of ideas, but a living current, passed on from teacher to student. A path that asks commitment, depth, and sincerity, and offers transformation in return.

Within a Grove, men are not just individuals walking parallel paths. They become part of a brotherhood, where growth is supported, witnessed, and shared. In a world that often separates love, sexuality, and spirituality, the Minoan Brotherhood brings them back together into one coherent experience.

This is why the path matters. Because it offers not only knowledge or practice, but a way to become whole.

The training of the Minoan Brotherhood is not a quick course or a spiritual hobby. It is a path of transformation, one that unfolds gradually through dedication, experience, and the guidance of the tradition. Those who walk this path do so not only to learn about the Mysteries, but to live them.

Be aware that a candidate for our Grove must feel comfortable with homo-eroticism and intimacy, in a comradely, fraternal and sexual sense, and want to experience this in a ritual context.

Nothing is done without consent, boundaries are always discussed and respected before anything. But sexual mysticism is a key component for the Magical Work done within the Grove.

Therefore, those who are not open to work with sacred sexuality might feel that the Tradition of the Minoan Brotherhood, as practiced by Kêpos tou Érotos, is not the right place for them.

In any case, we are always open to answer any questions and concerns regarding the training process.
